As some of the owners of cars based on the Elise and Exige platform have noticed the way checks are carried on cars and the way insurance companies are excluding everything ‘tuning’ on cars is growing rapidly.
To play safe you would need to run road legal brake pads such as these DS Performance pads from Ferodo.
The pads come with an imprinted E number on the back which clears you of using ‘illegal’ pads.
DS Performance pads are close to DS2500 pads, but not exactly the same in performance.
As people ‘in the know’ are aware of pad specifications are often visualised in so called spider diagrams. The reason for such a diagram is because of the effect you’d have on the total performance of a brake pad when you only change one parameter. For instance, when you ‘pull’ the friction level up, you will see other specs such as dust generation and noise go up as well, but longevity may go down.
The E qualification demands all these parameters to be in a well specified range, which is why the manufacturer can’t increase friction just like that without breaching the other specification rules.
