This sensor is used to feed back the crankshaft speed to the engine management system.

When the sensor starts playing up, the engine might not start at all, it might be hesitating in acceleration or it might idle very poor (or not at all).

All of these signs indicate a malfunctioning crank speed sensor which then needs to be replaced.
